    The Comedy News For 01/21/18

    Specific News Story

Some Things Speak For Themselves: That Sounds Fair

Whining about a deck stacked against you doesn’t change it. But sometimes the deck has been stacked so unfairly, that you have to speak out. Unlike a lot of comics, I understand why building a following is important. However, clubs need to share part of the blame for making building a following so difficult. If I do bring twenty people, they may have to wade through a line-up of nineteen amateurs before I go up, while consuming two cokes priced higher than gasoline. Why would anyone do that? Then there’s another reality this video doesn’t talk about. Sometimes a bunch of fans commit to a show that just gets cancelled. Sometimes the only reason it got cancelled was the booker changed his mind. Try to get that group to commit to another show.

If you underdraw, you still have a crowd there to see you and you may get axed from the show anyway. That also makes it unlikely those few people that you did draw will ever come back to the club. Most of these things are not something any LA comedy club will address or change. However, the irony is, while these things hurt comedians, they also hurt the bottom line of the clubs that also institutionalized them even more. The fact that this video has nearly 7,000 views, despite the fact that it's clearly targetted at comedians, implies even comedy club patrons are starting to recognize these unfortunate patterns. First time cutsomers are the hardest customers to get. That's marketing 101. So if a comic draws anyone, the comedy club would be wise to treat those people like their the most important person in the world, even if it was less than they hoped for. Why? Because then those first time customers would be a fan of the comedian who drew them and become a fan of the club itself. And that's in everyone's best interest, especially the comedy club.
