Monster-in-Law was a 2005 romantic comedy film, directed by Robert Luketic. The film marked a return to cinema for Jane Fonda for the first time in 15 years. In the film, Jennifer Lopez plays Charlotte, also known as Charlie. When Charlie, meets a surgeon named Kevin she thinks that she’s found her Prince Charming. Meanwhile, his obsessive mother and famous anchor Viola, played by Jane Fonda, is being replaced on her TV talk show and suffers a severe nervous breakdown. When she leaves the clinic, Kevin unexpectedly proposes to Charlie. Viola, who can’t stand Charlie, immediately becomes jealous and decides to make Charlie so crazy that she calls off the weeding. With her trusted assistant, Ruby, who is secretly working against her, Viola tries everything to drive Charlie away. However, Charlie eventually catches on begins to fights back.
Monster-in-Law earned $23 million on its opening weekend. The film would go on to earn $82 million at the US box office and $71 million outside the United States for $154 million in worldwide ticket sales. With a $60 million budget, the film was a solid box office hot. Critically, the film did not fare so well with only 16 percent positive reviews according to the aggregate review site Rotten Tomatoes.COM. Michael Wilmington of the Chicago Tribune stated, "This isn't a very smart movie, rattling along as it does in the bright, superficial, meaninglessly expert way of too many modern romantic comedies, and definitely of too many Jennifer Lopez comedies." While the film was nominated for six Teen Choice Awards including a Best Leading Actress nod for Jennifer Lopez, she was also nominated for a dubious 2005 Razzie Award for Worst Actress in a Motion Picture Film all at the same time.
